Fire risk has been underestimated at the proposed site for the Ginninderry housing development, according to a University of NSW Canberra report.
Fire risk at the proposed Ginninderry suburban development on the ACT/NSW northern border has been significantly underestimated, according to a new scientific report.
“Intense bushfires, ember storms and turbulent winds are real threats,” says Dr Jason Sharples of the UNSW, Canberra, author of the report.
“The current risk assessment standard does not account for recent scientific insights into extreme fire development,” says Dr Sharples. “Canberra people remember the fires of 2003, when extreme fire came out of the hills and into the suburbs.”

AFTER a small GPS tracker was attached to the back of a male “little eagle”, one of the ACT’s rarest birds of prey, the GPS is now revealing surprising information about the bird says Minister for the Environment Mick Gentleman.
With a GPS tracker strapped on its back one of the ACT's rarest birds of prey has been shown to migrate from Canberra to the Northern Territory.
On the western fringes of Belconnen, a new development project, Ginninderry, is taking shape. The development will see more than 5000 houses built within the ACT and (ultimately) a similar number across the border in NSW.
Within weeks buyers can register for the first sales at Ginninderry and the developer behind the joint venture plans to reopen Ginninderra Falls in the next five to seven years.
