Dear Dr Finlayson,

Following on from your recent correspondence to Minister Katrina’s office in regards to the proposed Cross Border Working Group for the proposed Ginninderra Falls National Park, I have been in contact with Mr Gary Saunders, Manager, Reserve Conservation Planning and Assessment Team, Office of Environment and Heritage.

Mr Saunders has advised me that staff from his team have explained the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) reserve acquisition program to yourself and members of the Ginninderra Falls Association in late 2012.

I understand that the process currently in place is that:

• NPWS will undertake an initial new area investigation to identify values, socio-economic, management issues and costs of the proposal, and particularly the one block on offer by the Hyles family
• the new area investigation is due by end of June 2013
• the investigation will make recommendations about the viability of any proposal and if any further investigation work is required
• once this report is available NSW may consider if a Cross Border Working Group is necessary to deal with any planning/ urban development/ park management issues and any possible cost sharing arrangements.

I have discussed this matter with Mr David Rowe, General Manager Yass Shire Council and ACT Government officials. Given the investigations being undertaken by NPWS, we will jointly consider the establishment of a Cross Border Working Group following the finalisation of that report.
