Murrumbidgee - Ginninderra Gorges National Park: Information Note 6

As arranged, three committee members of the Ginninderra Falls Association, Anna Hyles, Chris Watson and Graeme Barrow, met with the Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher, and two ACT Government officials on 29 May 2012 to discuss GFA's national park proposal for Ginninderra Falls and part of the Murrumbidgee River. We were given an excellent hearing over 35 minutes and were impressed with Ms Gallagher's grasp of the issues and her evident background knowledge. Our understanding is that Ms Gallagher will write to the NSW Premier, Barry O'Farrell, and the Mayor of the Yass Shire Council, Nic Carmody, suggesting that a working party be set up to investigate the proposal.

The same three members also attended a hearing of the ACT Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Climate Change, Environment and Water on 24 May and made statements about the Association's submission to the Committee's eco-tourism inquiry. We were questioned by Committee members Meredith Hunter, Mary Porter and Zed Seselja and as with the later meeting with Ms Gallagher, appreciated the Committee's grasp of the issues.

WIN-TV News recorded interviews with Chris and Anna on 24 May and gave an informative report in its Canberra bulletin that evening. We thank WIN for its continuing interest.

As already notified, the Association will hold a quarterly public meeting at the Belconnen Library meeting room on Tuesday, 5 June 2012, starting at 7.30 pm. The guest speaker will be Damon Cusack, who will talk on the subject, Ginninderra Falls to Mulligans Flat: Ginninderra Creek as an "urban wildlife corridor".
